Welcome To Mesa

Overview

While some enjoy being right in the middle of the action, others appreciate proximity and access with a calmer ambiance. For the latter, Mesa’s sizable geography, access to outdoor destinations, and variety of regions represent a range of opportunities to pursue a balanced lifestyle.

SPECIAL NOTE:
If you feel any bias while reading this article, it might be due to the fact that our Team Lead, Jesse Lowery, was born and raised in Mesa. (We won’t say which hospital, because it doesn’t bear the same name anymore and that might date him…)

City Geography

The City of Mesa is one of the larger cities in the Phoenix Metra, beginning at the edge of Tempe and running east before turning south toward Queen Creek. As a result, the city almost feels as if it has three different areas within its borders. First, West Mesa was relatively dormant for years but has more recently become a target for development thanks to construction in and around downtown Mesa. More recently, a developer has also begun to tackle the demolition of the old Fiesta Mall with a plan for a brand new development, which could be another growth catalyst for the area.

Next up, Mesa’s northeastern district is home to a diverse mixture of townhomes, traditional neighborhoods, and million-dollar homes. Two of the lovely, upscale developments in this part of the city include the groves (an area blanketed with citrus trees that has produced some of the most expensive homes in Mesa) and the Las Sendas area, a lovely network of neighborhoods located just outside of the corner of the 202 Freeway toward Red Mountain. These areas hold quite a few million- and multimillion-dollar homes, some of which can be obtained for attractive prices relative to upscale areas of Scottsdale. Finally, the southeastern section of Mesa is the city’s newest sector as development in the Eastmark community has driven the construction of an area of town that is largely new.

From a commercial standpoint, Mesa is home to quite a few industrial developments, including buildings for many large companies, activity spots like Revel Surf and Arizona Athletic Grounds, and multiple large data center buildouts. Mesa Gateway Airport also provides direct access to the city and represents a large commercial development opportunity.

Restaurants

If you couldn’t tell yet from our area guides, the Lowery Premier Team loves a good restaurant. Be sure to check off every item on this delicious list to earn “true local” status in Mesa! (Bonus points if you can do it in a week or less.)

  • BOARD & BATTEN - In a quiet area of Northeast Mesa, you’ll find this cute little eatery packs a menu full of well-made food, alongside a lovely ambiance. We suggest picking a day with beautiful weather and enjoying a meal on their ample patio space.

  • JALAPEÑO BUCK’S - While it may look like little more than a shack on the outside, Mesa locals know that Buck’s is home to delicious BBQ flavors, including a unique take on BBQ-meets-burritos. Don’t plan on a fancy meal or indoor seating here, but expect great food every time!

  • TC EGGINGTON’S - A go-to brunch spot for the Lowery Family for almost 25 years, Eggington’s brings great, classic brunch options that just make you happy. This place is cute instead of fancy and it hits the spot with reliable preparation (and fantastic french toast).

  • Gyros Place - We’re back on the secret Mesa hotspots with this delicious (but tiny) shop. If you want a fantastic Gyro, you can count on finding consistent, amazing flavor in every bite at this don’t miss location.

  • MEKONG PLAZA - If you enjoy food from across the pond (no, the other pond), you can count on finding all manner of tasty Asian food and beverage options at this West Mesa plaza.

Activities

When you’re ready to explore this great city, you’ll find quite the variety of options. Here are some of our suggestions:

  • If you’re interested in a great round of golf, Longbow and Las Sendas Golf Clubs are great options, especially with so many months of golf-friendly weather.

  • For those who love the great outdoors, Usery Mountain Recreational Area offers hiking, an outdoor shooting range, and even access to tubing on the Salt River or boating on Saguaro Lake.

  • We may not have oceanfront property, but you CAN visit Revel Surf for beach time, surfing, platform jumping, and more. This place is a great opportunity to both escape and enjoy Arizona’s summer heat.

  • Downtown Mesa has undergone serious revitalization over the past decade or so, producing desirable food, drink, entertainment, and exploration options. Plan to spend a full Saturday in the area for a taste of everything!
